Dr. John Agbo, PhD — Fellow, International African Society of Sciences (FIASS)

Dr. John Agbo is an accomplished biomedical scientist whose academic and research portfolio spans physiology, cardiovascular science, pharmacology, and translational medicine. His interdisciplinary work focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of metabolic and endocrine disorders, with a special emphasis on hypertension, obesity-related cardiovascular risk, and endocrine pathologies. Leveraging both preclinical and translational models, Dr. Agbo’s research has significantly advanced understanding of the physiological interplay between hormonal regulation, metabolic stress, and cardiovascular dysfunction.

Dr. Agbo has received multiple prestigious honors in recognition of his scientific contributions. Most notably, he was awarded the Research Recognition Award in Endocrinology & Metabolism and the Martink Frank Travel Award by the American Physiological Society (APS). His groundbreaking work has also earned competitive grant funding from the American Heart Association (AHA), recognizing his project’s importance in advancing heart and stroke research. In acknowledgment of this achievement, he was inducted into the Researchers@Heart network of AHA/ASA awardees.

His academic leadership is equally distinguished. Dr. Agbo currently serves as Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Nigeria. His leadership extends beyond administration to capacity building and mentorship, as reflected in his prior involvement in organizing academic seminars and student scientific programs, for which he has received formal recognition.

Following the completion of his doctoral studies, Dr. Agbo embarked on postdoctoral research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he continues to explore novel interventions for cardiometabolic disorders using molecular, pharmacological, and electrophysiological tools.

Throughout his career, Dr. Agbo has exemplified academic rigor, scientific leadership, and service to the broader biomedical community. He has a strong publication record, consistently presents at high-profile scientific meetings, and maintains active affiliations with global scientific bodies. His ongoing research and mentorship efforts underscore his deep commitment to advancing science in Africa and globally. As a Fellow of the International African Society of Sciences (FIASS), Dr. Agbo brings not only scholarly excellence but also a spirit of collaboration, service, and dedication to scientific innovation that will inspire future generations.
