Associate Fellow Membership
The Associate Fellow designation (AFIASS) of the International African Society of Sciences recognizes individuals who have demonstrated early to mid-career excellence, professional distinction, and growing scientific leadership in science, technology, health, or engineering disciplines. This category serves as a formal step toward Fellowship (FIASS), highlighting rising scholars and professionals who are making nationally or internationally recognized contributions to science and society.
Eligibility Criteria
1. Academic Qualification
Candidates must hold a minimum of a master’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or health-related discipline. A Ph.D. or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory.
2. Professional Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of 7 years of post-degree professional experience in research, higher education, industry, public service, or science communication.
3. Evidence of Achievement
Candidates must demonstrate measurable accomplishments such as:
- National or international recognition through awards, grants, fellowships, patents, or invited talks.
- Authorship of peer-reviewed publications or technical innovations.
- Leadership in research projects, academic programs, industry labs, or community-based science initiatives.
4. Societal Engagement
Applicants must show meaningful involvement in the broader scientific community, including mentorship, committee work, outreach, or science-policy interface. Evidence of service to the goals of IASS will strengthen the application.
5. Nomination Support
- Applicants must be nominated by two existing IASS members, with at least one holding Fellow (FIASS) or Executive status.
- Two letters of endorsement are required to confirm the candidate’s readiness and merit for Associate Fellowship.

- Personal Statement (500 words) outlining accomplishments, values, and vision
- Evidence of scientific contributions (publications, grants, projects, awards)
- Two endorsement letters from IASS-affiliated sponsors
Selection Process
The Membership and Advancement Committee shall evaluate all AFIASS applications using a rubric based on:
- Scientific merit and innovation
- Career trajectory
- Community engagement
- Alignment with IASS mission and ethics
- External peer input may be solicited for validation. Final endorsement is granted by the Governing Council upon recommendation by the Committee.
Privileges and Responsibilities
Associate Fellows (AFIASS) enjoy elevated recognition within the Society. They:
- Are eligible to vote and hold leadership roles in committees and programs (excluding Executive Council)
- Receive priority access to training grants, leadership workshops, and scientific exchanges
- May use the post-nominal title “AFIASS”
- Are fast-tracked for FIASS nomination after 3 years of active service and continued merit
- Are invited to participate in mentor programs and serve as emerging leaders in IASS initiatives
Recognition
New Associate Fellows are officially announced during the Society’s Annual Scientific Research Conference or General Assembly. They are:
- Included in the Register of Fellows and Associates
- Profiled in the IASS newsletter and website
- Recognized in a formal certificate and pin presentation at the induction ceremony
