My name is Dr. Lawal Adewale Mufutau, and my journey in medicine has been shaped by a deep commitment to patient care, service, and continuous growth. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working across different areas of healthcare in Nigeria, gaining experiences that have strengthened both my clinical skills and my understanding of the diverse needs of patients and communities.
I currently serve as the Acting Head of the General Surgery Department at Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, where I lead a team focused on delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred surgical care. My clinical experience spans over eight years, during which I have worked in general medical practice, emergency care, inpatient and outpatient management, as well as rural and community healthcare delivery. These experiences have exposed me to the realities of healthcare in both urban and underserved settings, further shaping my dedication to improving access and outcomes.
My training and practice have allowed me to work across multiple specialties, including general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine, and psychiatry. I have progressed through several clinical roles at Specialist Hospital, Sokoto—from Medical Officer to Senior Medical Officer and later Principal Medical Officer—each stage contributing to my growth in leadership and clinical decision-making. I have also gained valuable exposure at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, and Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, where I managed a wide range of medical and surgical cases.
As part of my commitment to advancing surgical care, I undertook specialised training through the Filaricele Anatomical Surgical Task Trainer (FASTT) hydrocele surgery programme. This experience strengthened my interest in improving surgical outcomes, particularly in resource-limited environments where the need is often greatest.
I am deeply honored to have been selected as a 2025 recipient of the prestigious CELKHA Award of Excellence in Medicine. This recognition reflects not only my personal efforts but also the collective dedication of the teams I have worked with over the years. It motivates me to continue striving for excellence in clinical practice and to contribute meaningfully to strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
At the heart of my work is a simple goal: to provide compassionate, high-quality care while making a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the communities I serve.
